My Name is Johann van Rooyen and I am originally from South Africa where I was working as a veterinarian in a mixed practise. I came to the UK 20 years ago and after 8 years as a veterinarian in London I decided to move to Cardiff, South Wales and have been here for the last 12 years.
I grew up in rural South Africa where a knife was seen as an essential day to day tool. We all learnt to respect it very quickly. Definitely not a weapon that needed to be banned like in the UK. I started making knives as a boy of about 10 years and was stitching bits of leather together from about then as well. Must be why I am enjoying being a surgeon today. I could make a catapult, bow and arrow for hunting and a useful knife before I could drive a car. Above is a picture of my beloved dog Ruffin that died in 2012 of cancer. I derived my logo from a combination of his and my initials. – JVRuff. He was always lying by my feet when I was in my workshop filing wood and metal so I thought he deserved a mention.
Apart from my family – wife and son ,I have 2 more loves in my life. My Landrover and hunting ,shooting and outdoor life. Below picture of my Landy. Not the one that travelled through Africa for 8 months.
